Career Objective

Department of General Surgery was incorporated in Government Medical College, Bhandara in 2024 as one of the final year subject with aim of providing quality education to undergraduate students.

The department provides basic training in General Surgery to undergraduates and also provides general surgical care for patients.

The patients coming to this institute are not only from Bhandara district but also from neighbouring districts like Gondia, Gadchiroli, Balaghat & some part of Chandrapur. Since Government Medical College was established, the department too inherits the faith of masses in patient care. This department is committed to ensure accessible, high quality and ethical care for all patients coming to this hospital.

Functions & objectives.

  1.  A medical student after graduation may have different avenues of his/her professional career and may work either as a first contact physician in a private, semi private or public sector or may take up further specialization in surgery or other specialties.
  2.  He may have to work in different settings such as rural, semi-urban or urban which may have deficient or compromised facilities.
  3.  At the end of the teaching/training the undergraduate will be able to:
  4. a) Diagnose and manage common health problems of the individual and the community appropriate to his/her position as a member of the health team at primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
  5. b) Be competent to practice curative, preventive, promotive and rehabilitative medicine and understand the concept of primary health care.
  6. c) Understand the importance and implementation of the National Health Programmes in the context of national priorities.
  7. d) Understand the socio-psychological, cultural, economic and environmental factors affecting health and develop human attitude required for professional responsibilities.
  8. e) Develop the ability for continued self-learning with a scientific attitude of mind.

About Department

The Department of Surgery at Government Medical College
(GMC) Bhandara
is one of the premier clinical departments
of the institution, dedicated to providing comprehensive surgical
care, quality medical education, and advanced clinical training.

The department plays a vital role in delivering tertiary healthcare
services to the population of Bhandara and neighboring regions.

The department is well equipped to manage a wide spectrum of
surgical conditions, including emergency and elective cases. It
provides comprehensive care in General Surgery and offers a broad
range of specialized surgical services using modern diagnostic and
therapeutic techniques.

The department has expertise in advanced laparoscopic surgery,
thoracic surgical procedures including thoracotomy, complex soft
tissue and lump resections, gastrointestinal oncology, and
hepatopancreatobiliary surgery.

These services are delivered by experienced surgeons using
evidence-based protocols while maintaining the highest standards
of patient safety and ethical care.

The department is actively involved in undergraduate and
postgraduate teaching, imparting theoretical knowledge, clinical
skills, and hands-on surgical training. Regular academic activities,

In addition to patient care and teaching, the
Department of Surgery at GMC Bhandara is actively

doctors, nursing personnel, and supporting staff, the department

About College

The Government Medical College, Bhandara was established in 2024 with an intake capacity of 100 MBBS students. It was inaugurated on 9th October 2024 by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi through video conferencing, along with eight other newly established medical colleges in Maharashtra.


Initially, the college commenced functioning in the premises of the newly constructed Women’s Hospital, Bhandara, while the District Hospital, Bhandara, is serving as the teaching hospital. For the development of a dedicated campus, 25 acres of land have been allotted at Mouza Paladi, Bhandara, located 7.2 km from the present site. Bridge & Roof India Ltd. has been appointed as the project management company for infrastructure development.
